Al-Markaz Mosque, Makassar

The biggest and grandiose mosque in Southeast Asia, Al Markaz Al Islami Mosque is the pride of Makassar resident. Its beautiful architecture is influenced by Masjidil Haram in Mecca as well as Masjid Nabawi in Medina. Ir. Achmad Nurman, the designer, also adds architecture elements of Katangka Mosque in Gowa as well as Bugis-Makassar traditional house. Initiated by General M. Jusuf, the building started on 8 May 1994 and finished on 12 January 1996. Located at Mesjid Raya Street Makassar City, this three floors building looks lovely with a green color nuance. Beside its main functions as praying place, this mosque serves as an education center of Islam. Al Markaz Mosque is dedicated to become one of centers of Islam study and development in eastern part of Indonesia.

The Soltanieh Dome
The Soltanieh Dome or the mausoleum of Oljeitu ( Sultan Mohammad Khodabandeh ) is an outstanding work of Persian and Islamic architecture built between 1302 and 1312 BC. Soltanieh Dome, which was the world's tallest building of its time, currently ranks third after Italy's Saint Mary church in Florence and Turkeys Aya Sofia Mosque in Istanbul Located near Iran's western Zanjan province, this 54 meter tall octagonal base building comprises three parts : mausoleum, dome chamber and vault. The dome chamber is decorated with Islamic inscriptions and beautiful muqarnas ( a traditional Persian art ). The king's body was laid to rest in the vault and two guards protected the gilded royal tombstone at all times. This historical building designed by Mason Ali Shah Tabrizi was registered in UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2006.

The results of the vote counting recapitulation of Commission of General Election ( KPU ) showed that SBY-Boediono won the highest vote with 73,874,562 votes or 60.80 percent, followed by Megawati Soekarnoputri, Prabowo Subianto with 32,548,105 votes or 26.79 percent and the couple Jusuf Kalla ( JK-Wiranto) with 15,081,814 votes or 12.41 percent. The votes came from 121,504,481 valid votes from 176,637,056 voters who registered. While voters who did not use theirs rights to vote reached 49,212,158 people or 27,77 percent.

200th Anniversary of Bandung City

Bandung does not stand together with the formation of Bandung regency / district. The city was built with very long grace period after the Bandung regency standing . Bandung regency was formed in middle of 17th century AD, with the first regent was Tumenggung Wiraangunangun. He ruled until 1681. Originally the capital of Bandung regency was Krapyak (now Dayeuhkolot ), its approximately 11 kilometers to the south of the city center now. When Bandung regency led by the sixth regent, RA Wiranatakusumah II ( 1794 - 1829 ), named "the Dalem I", the power of the nation switched from the Company to the Government of the Netherlands East Indies, with the first Governor -General Herman Willem Daendels ( 1808 - 1811 ).

For the smoothness of running of his duties on the island of Java, Daendels built the Post Road ( Groote Postweg ) from Anyer on the western tip of West Java to Panarukan at the eastrern tip of East Java ( about 1000 km ). The construction of the great post road was conducted by indigenous people under the leadership of each local district regents.

In the are of Bandung particularly and the Priangan region generally, the great post road was began to build the construction in teh middle of 1808, by repairing and widen the existing roads. Today, in the area of Bandung, the roads are known as Jalan Jendral Sudirman - Jalan Asia Afrika - Jalan A. Yani, continues to Sumedang and so on. For the smoothness of the post road construction, and for simplyfing the officials of colonial government to reach the regent's office, Daendels through a letter dated May 25, 1810 was requesting Bandung Regent and Parakanmuncang Regent to move the regency capital to Cikapundung regency and Andawadak ( Tanjungsari ) regency, near the great post road.

Apparently Daendels did not realize, that long time before the letter went out, the Regent of Bandung had already planned to move the capital of Bandung regency, he even had found a pretty good and strategic place for the central of government. The place that had been chosen was forested land, located on the west bank of the River Cikapundung, the south bank of the Post Road that was being built ( the central city now ). The reason of the displacement of the capital were, because Krapyak was not a strategic place for the capital of government administration, since it was located on the southern side of Bandung and often flooding when the rainy season came.

Around the end year of 1808 / the beginning of year 1809, the Regents along with a number of his people were moving from Krapyak, approaching land for the new capital. At first, the Regent was living in Cikalintu ( Cipaganti area), then he moved to Balubur Downstream, the moved again to Kampur Bogor ( Kebon Kawung, today on Pakuan Building land ). The city was built on the initiative of the Regent of Bandung, the city's development even directly led by the Regent. In other words, Regent R.A. Wiranatakusumah II was the founder ( the founding father ) of Bandung city. Bandung City was inaugurated, as the new capital of Bandung regency with a decision letter dated September 25, 1810.

Hasanudin did not want to surrender from Dutch colonial which center in Batavia. He always gets attack from Dutch troops, the first attack held in 1660, the in 1666 ; in 1667 and in 1669. The war is to help the people outside the kingdom, which get violence by the Dutch. On March 1645 he send strong fleet consist of 100 boats to help Moluccas people to fight againts Dutch, known as "Hongi War". On his rule the war happen many times, but actually, he is not a leader who likes violence. His humanism as great king, shown up when he accepted Bungaraya Agreement in 18 November 1667. With this agreement, he can prevent many victims in both side, in other side his troops must face with his own nation like Tidore, Ternate, Buton, and Bone which help Dutch. It is his strategy to get well plan before next war.

He was die in 12 June 1670 in youngest age of 39 years. In his short age, many things has been done, his dedications awarded as National Hero by Indonesian government on 1973.

Sultan Agung Hanyakrakusuma is the 3rd Mataram King wich ruled in 1613-1645. His nickname is Mas Rangsang. He is grandson of Panembahan Senapati who built Mataram Kingdom and he is the oldest son of prabu hanyokrowati ( Mas Jolang ) 2nd mataram King.

On Sultan Agung rules, Mataram Kingdom gained top of glory era in every sector . His big aim to unite Java Island in Mataram regions almost accomplish, only sultanate of Banten and Batavia still rot in. Mataram is not only rules on military power, but he did smooth politic by married off his princess from the opponent Kingdom.

His famous history is sending Mataram expedition troops to Batavia for subjugate the VOC. In history record, two times he atttacks the VOC in Batavia in 1628 and 1629. Event the expedition was fail, but his attack make a positive effect for other kingdon such as Banten wich joinedto chase the VOC from Batavia. His troops attack laso made many financial losses and weaken of the VOC troops.

In religius sector, he was an obedient sultan in Islamic activity. Every Islamic day, he went to the mosque and sharing a food to his people. This event calls "gerebeg" and the tradition still done until now. he also mixed the culture of Islam with Javanese culture. He decided Java calendar ( Hijriyah ), which still follows by Java people.

In art sector, literature developed well. Gending and Wayang Krucil are a famous literature written by Sultan Agung. The Sultan passed away in 1645 in Imogiri.

Merlion is an imaginary creature with appearance head of lion and body of fish. Story behind this creature came up with the legend of Sang Nila Utama, , who saw a lion when hunting in an island initially known as Temasek. Great Argus ( Argusianus argus )
Included in Phasanidae, which lives on the ground, this species files in short distance and can run fast. The male relatively big ( 120cm ) and the female is smaller ( 60cm ). Prefers to live in area up to 900m above the sea level, this bird spreads from forest area of Tenasserim Myanmar, Southwest Thailand, Sabah and Malaysia Peninsula, Brunei Darussalam, and Kalimantan Indonesia. The bird faces threat from losing of its habitat as well as animal hunting. International Union for Concervation of Nature ( IUCN ) classifies it in Near Threatened ( NT ) status.

White-winged Duck ( Cairina scutulata )
Classified in Anatidae and concrentated in wet area, this bird spreads from Southeast India and Bangladesh to Southeast Asia in Sumatra and Java. The approximate number of population in the world is about 1.000, whereas nearly 150 live in East and Southwest of Sumatra. With a rather white on head and neck, this dark colored bird is relatively big ( 66-75cm ). Its back is glossy dark green and dark brown at the underside. IUCN classifies this bird in Red List Endangered ( EN ).

Relatively big (80cm) with black and white color, this bird has a red beak, black wings, back, crown and chest, white nape of neck,belly and tail as well as pink face. This species spreads from Southern Thailand, along Malaysia Peninsula, Kalimantan and Sumatra. Nowadays, the estimated population in Sumatra about 150. IUCN classifies this bird in Red List Endangered ( EN ) status.

National Children's Day 2009 commemoration is the right moment to arouse awareness on the importance of protection and fulfillment of children rights. As stated in National Constitution UUD 1945 article 28B subsection (2) : "All children have the right to live, grow and develop as well as to be protected from violence and discrimination". Therefore, all national components including government, business sector, society, family and parent have to cooperate for ensuring protection and comfort of our next generation.

The theme National Children's Day commemoration this year is "I am Indonesian Kid, Creative, Innovative, and Outstanding to Face the Future Challenge." Among the purposed goals are socializing and providing information to families and public concerning the magnitude of fulfilling children rights as well as developing network and partnership between government and society, including non governmental organization, business sector, press and other parties to support services for comfort and protection of Indonesian children.

To commemorate this national event, stamp series of National Children's Day 2009 issued on 23 July 2009. Stamp design features ordinary children plays consisting of rope playing, hide and seek, kite and cycling. The illustration is worked by Bryan Jevoncia, 8 years old, 5th grade student of Suster Primary School, Pontianak. Reading is a key towards civilization progress. Since the invention of alphabet as a means of written communications, reading ability has becomes essentials for character building and national development. However, illiteracy remains a problem in many countries, in Indonesia about 10,5% people are illiterate, whether in less-developed countries ( research shows that the average of 60% of African peoples are illiterate ). Furthermore, the eradication of illiteracy is not the ultimate battle because another important task is waiting : socializing reading habit.

Reading habit in Indonesia is still something to improve. In Jakarta, for instance, only 200 persons in average visit local library. This contrasts with its highly dense population which reaches more than 10 millions. National library data show the similiar condition. Amongst a few library visitors, less than 20% borrows books. Assumed that reading habit resides in those who borrow the books, it is fair to conclude that reading habit statistics of book reading reach a level of 80%.

The indications of low interest in reading reveals in the consumptions level of newspaper within the society. Ideally, one paper is consumed by ten people. Nonetheless, in Indonesia one paper is printed for 45 people. This ratio is still below those of The Philippines and Sri Lanka at a level of 1 : 30 and 1 : 38. When it comes to proving books and developing interest in reading, Indonesia is still left behind compared to several countries. According to International Publisher Association, Canada, the highest level of book productions belongs to UK with nearly 100,000 book a year. Subsequently, Germany and Japan with 80,000 and 65,000 titles respectively, whereas Indonesia produces only 5,000 titles per year. Improving reading habit more challenging because nowadays it is gradually super sided by watching habit. Generally, reading culture goes through pre literary, literary and post-literary phases. In fact, in many societies, a leap occurs from pre-literary to post-literary.

Aiming at raising interest on reading and writing in the occasion of National Education Day, The Directorate general of Post and Telecommunications of Indonesia issues stamps series called “Love Reading and Writing”. Stamp designs depict two winning works of National Stamp Design Competition 2006, First Winner Elizabeth Christine Yuwono ( Surabaya) and second winner Suroso ( Yogyakarta ). Complementing it, Pos Indonesia PT issues First Day Cover ( FDC ) for stamp series. FDC design features artwork of the third winner by Djoko Soejanto ( Bandung ).

The history of national herbs industry of Indonesia cannot stand apart from role of the oldest and the biggest company of Javanese herbs PT Nyonya Meneer. This company pioneered by Nyonya Meneer who of inherited skills and knowledge to compound herbal tonic. Born in Sidoarjo in 1895 and named Menir, she used to be called Nonie Menir in her child time.

She was grown up and taught household managing skill by her mother. Housekeeping and herbs nurturing was her daily routine job. Education planted by her parents has built a disciplined and creative character on her. At seventeenth, Nonie Menir got married by Ong Bian Wan, a young merchant from Semarang. And she was called Nyonya Meneer since then. Nyonya Meneer entrepreneurship in herbs industry was preceded by the sickness of her beloved husband. Ani Idrus, born in Sawahlunto West Sumatra on 25 November 1918, is one of prominent women in journalism and printed medium. A long time occupation as a journalist had built her experience in news reporting business. She lived that profession through bad and good times until reached what she ever wanted. In 1936, she had gotten a good reputation in press arena. She worked at Sinar Deli daily Medan. Together with her husband Haji Mohammad Said, she published political magazine Seruan Kita in 11 January 1947. They also published Pewarta Deli , Majalah Wanita, and Harian Waspada. In 1969, Ani Idrus headed several publication, such as Waspada, Dunia Wanita magazine, and edition of Koran Masuk Desa as well as Koran Masuk Sekolah.

In 1955, she got a chance to cover negotiation between Tengku Abdul Rahman and Malay Communist leader Chin Peng at Baling, Malaysia.

In 1974, she joined Adam Malik delegation attending Non Alignment Summit at Ceylon. She had brought up women affairs in her journalism. On a discussion week at Centre of French Culture Jakarta, she presented paper titled Women Position in Press Management. While a symposium held by Association of Student at Faculty of Communication USU , her paper was the Prospect of Women Press in Indonesia Press Industry. In 1991 she received award from Minister for Woman Affairs on behalf of Harian Waspada that was elected as the as the best newspaper covering in national development. Involvement in various activities had brought her nem experiences and it finally attracted her more in doing so. In the occasion of Kartini Day 1978, she established Perguruan ERIA which consisting of kindergarten, preliminary school and secondary school located at Jalan Sisingamangaraja195 Medan. In 1984, she opened Islamic preliminary school Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Rohamah at Selaman Ujung Simpang Lima Medan. She entered political arena at the early years ago. In 1937, she joined Gerakan Indonesia in Medan. Previously in 1934, she chaired Vice Presient of Indonesia Muda Organization as a proponent of youth movement. In 1949, she became a cadre of PNI. Several times, she was appointed as The Head of Information as well as a member of PNI central beureu at Jakarta. In 1950 she founded and chaired Front Wanita Sumatra Utara. At national election 1955, she refused Konstituante council membership.

She was a member of DPRGR Sumatra Utara Province representing woman fraction in the period 1960-1967 as well as Golongan Karya in the next period. And in 1992, she was elected as a member of MPR representing regional delegation. Due to her prominent roles in development of Indonesia, she received several award from The Goverment of The Republic of Indonesia, such as Satya Lencana Penegak Pers Pancasila, Anugerah Citra Wanita Pembangunan Indonesia, Anugerah Bintang Jasa Nararya, delivered by Minister of Women Affairs Mien Sugandhi, Putra Penerus Pembangunan Bangsa award, Lencana Emas, Tokoh Masyarakat Teladan Sumatra Utara, Srikandi award, Who of the year 1995 award, Citra Abadi Pembangunan award and Anugerah Peniti Emas 50 Tahun SPS Nort Sumatra. After passing, she was awarded Bintang Mahaputra Utama delivered by Vice President Megawati. Elderliness was not a handicap to work. She ran her lifetime profession with never bored principle. She kept on working until the end of her live. Passed in 9 January 1999, she left the fond memory that remains in the heart of the nations.

A Brief History of Ancient Olympic Games

The decision

to select Athens as the host city of the 2004 Olympic Games

has brought the Olympiads back to their ancient birthplace. It is recorded that the sporting festival dedicated to Zeus every four years began to take place in Olympia in 776 B.C. The Olympic Games were celebrated almost 1,200 years continuously. Situated in the northern part of Greece, Olympia was not actually a town but a grouping of temples and arenas in the fields.

Known as the most important Panhellenic festival, the

Olympic Games were attended not only by athletes but also by leaders, politicians, artists, poets and dealers from every part of Greece. In praise of the glory of the festival Pindar, a Greece poet living in 518-438 B.C., fervently wrote a poem.

“ No celestial body is warmer and brighter than the sun during daylight, as no sporting event is greater than the Olympic Games.”

In ancient Greece the athletes competed as individuals, not as teams, on amateur basis. They competed in boxing, wrestling, jump, disc and spear throwing, running and four-horse chariot race. The winners received only garlands of wild olive leaves put on their heads as crowns and were glorified as heroes for life. Besides, they deserved some privileges such as exemption from taxation and front row seats to all public spectacles. In their hometowns statues were erected in honor of the victors. Unfortunately in 393 A.D. the Roman Empire Theodosius declared the Olympic Games corrupt and put an end to them.

Modern Olympic Games

Until German excavation of the 1870’s Olympia was buried owing to earthquakes and floods. Fascinated by the cultural beauty of Greek found in the sacred ground of Olympia, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a young Frenchman , conceived the idea of Modern Olympic Games as the world’s greatest sporting event that would be held in different capital cities throughout the word every four years. In 1896 the first modern Olympic Games were staged in Athens ruled by new regulations in accordance with the need of modern time. The motto of the modern Olympic Games is “Citius-Altius-Fortius” which means “Faster-Higher

-Stronger”. Due to two World Wars the Olympic Movement failed to stage the greatest world sporting event in 1916, 1940 and 1944. From time to time the number of countries participating in the Olympic Games is growing steadily. In 1952 for the first time Indonesia took part in the Fifteenth held in Helsinki where 69different countries joined the sporting event. Mr.Coubertin and his colleagues like their heirs in the Modern Olympic Movement believed that global sport could become a global platform for peace.

Athena 2004

The 28th Olympic Games will be held on August 13-29,2004 in the Panathinaic Marble Stadium in Athens where the first Olympiads took place. The reconstruction of the historic bilding has been done under the control of Ministry of Ecology and Public Work. More than 200 countries, including Iraq and Afghanistan, will take part in the world sporting competition.

Its pempek from South Sumatra,Gudeg from Yogyakarta,Ayam Betutu from Bali , and Aunu Senebre from Papua.

The traditional food that shows on the stamp design generally it could attractfor tourist who want visit.

Pempek (South Sumatra)

Ingredients :
250gram massed Tenggiri fish meat
5 tbsp ice water
100 gram sago flour
2 tsp wheat flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 egg yolk

Kuah Cuko (Vinegar Sauce)
150 gram palm sugar
200 ml water
3 pieces red pepper
5 pieces onion
Sufficient salt50 gram tamarind,mixed 50 ml hot water,filter

How to make :
Mix Tenggiri fish with ice water then pour with sago flour and wheat flour step by step until it mixed. Add egg yolk and salt,stir until mixed and dough can be shape/roll.Shape the dough as you wish (if you want to make pempek kapal selam (submarine pempek),you shape it like big egg then make hole and fill with quail egg or chicken egg,covered it again.And if you make pempek lenjeran,you shape it like pipe,then wrap by banana leaf.)
Boil water in pan,then fill and boil pempek dough in boiling water until it cooked,take and drain it.
Kuah cuko :Mixed all the ingredients,cooked in medium heat,until boiled,stir a while.
Fried pempek with a plenty hot cooking oil until it looks goldfish. Cut pempek as you like,served on plate, pour slice of cucumber and yellow noodle for kuah cuko. It tastes good when its still hot.

Gudeg (Yogyakarta)

Ingredients :
1 1/2 kg
1 tbsp tamarind
2 tbsp palm sugar
6 laurel like leaves
4 glass coconut milk
Sufficient salt
Sufficient cooking oil

Massed spices
8 onions
4 cloves garlic
1/2 tsp coriander,fried
1/2 tsp caraway seed,fried
10 cundle nuts

How to make :
Cut young jack fruit size 4cm then boiled in water until it cooked,take and drain it. Mixed tamarind and palm sugar with water.Heat cooking oil,fried massed spaces with laurel like leaves,water,palm sugar and tamarind water. After is smelled,put in jack fruit,stir and add with salt.Put it coconut milk until it cooked (coagulate and oily).

Ayam Betutu (Bali)

Ingredients :
1 whole chicken,weigh about 2 kg (4 1/2 lb)
18 shallots,peeled,cut in half,and sliced
3 stalks lemon grass,finely sliced
6 candle nuts,chopped
5 cm (2in) ginger,peeled and chopped
8 cm (3in) fresh turmeric,peeled and chopped
8 cm (3in) kencur root,peeled and chopped
1 tsp black peppercorns,crushed
5 bird's-eye chillies,slices
1 tsp coriander seeds,crushed
2 tsp dried shrimp paste,roasted,and coarsely crushed
1 1/2 tbsp salt
3 tbsp oil
Banana leaves,greaseproof paper or aluminium foil for wrapping

How to make :
Wipe the chicken dry and set aside.Combine all ingredients,except banana leafs in a bowl and mix well.Rub the chicken outside with this mixture and fill the center of the chicken with the remainder.Close open chicken with satay skewer.Wrap in several layers of banana leaves,greaseproof,paper or foil and steam for 50 minutes.Transfer chicken to a moderate oven and bake at 180o Celcius (350o Fahreinheit)for 30 minutes.
Remove banana leaves,cut chicken meat up in small pieces and serve with stuffing.When cooked,the meat should be so tender that it falls of the bones.

Aunu Senebre (Papua)

Ingredients:
1 kg small fish
1/2 coconut scrapes
15 taro leaves and stalks

Spices:
1 tbsp salt

How to make:
After the fish being wash with small chopped taro leaves and stalks then boil it until cooked.Served the fish,taro leaves and stalks mix with salted coconut scrapes.Steamed.

Anniversary, both country issuing The Joint Issue Stamp Indonesia-Slovak. This Joint Issue Stamps is the first to be conducted between the two countries, and Slovakia is the first country in Europe with whom has Joint Issue Stamps.

On the stamps, there will be the famous figure of the Indonesian and Slovakia traditional Puppet. The Wayang (Indonesia Puppet) figure of Semar is on the Indonesia stamp, while Slovakia stamp shows the figure of Gasparko.

About Semar
Semar or Sang Hyang Ismoyo is the brother of the supreme god-Guru. He is assigned to lived in the earth to escort ksatrias. Figures of Semar and Ponokawan are purely Javanese Wayang. The words of Semar are from sengsem (to lure) and Marsudi (to search,to do. The other names of Semar are 1. Badranaya = Badra means dark cloud;Naya means face. with dark face).As a clever man, one has to have a bright face (happy,do not appear with dark face). 2. Bojagati : boja (food)symbolyzing knowledge, gati (real,true) meaning a true and correct knowledge. So, its meant a wise man always teaches a true and correct lesson.

Semar is one of the clowns in the wayang Golek tradition. His head and tongue move and his tongue sticks out as the wires are manipulated. The wayang has a strong tradition in the world of Java and Indonesia, representing the struggle between good and evil. This puppet is on a base and stands a little over 69cm. it can be removed from the base and both the head and arms can be moved. It has very finely detailed carvings on the head, with vivid color and detailed paintings. The body is decorated in Sarung. Each puppet is individually made by hand making each unique. They are made for the artists who make the puppets for Asep Sunarya (puppet master)who performs worldwide. These are Indonesia's finest and can be enjoyed by children adults alike.

About Gasparko

Various comical puppet characters that in Europe can be traced back as far as the 13th 14 th centuries culminate in a single figure a middle age clown. After the rise of the commedie dell'arte tradition in 14th century in Italy,the clown finds its way into several European countries and quickly adapts to local conditions. each nation adds something from its natural character, environment, and education

In Slovakia, Gasparko ( Silly Billy) became the most tupical character of traditional puppet theater. Of all his European brothers, Gasparko is the most lyrical, most delicate, least vulgar, and has a sense for justice. That in Slovakia Gasparko is depicted as a bandit or redresser of injustice may be the result of the long-term oppression of the Slovak nation where consolation was found only in dreams about heroism. Consequently, he was metamorphosed from the originally comic figure of a gnome into a little naughty boy.

Gasparko performed in almost every traditional puppet theatre performance. Mostly as a houseman, often as a clown or a squire, later as a wanderer, roamer, and tradesman. His partners related to his persona : a king, a knight, a prince, a princess, a witch, a magician, devils, watermen,dragons, and the Deaths. His wife is called Zabinka ( Little Frog) and their horse is Misko, together they provide entertainment up to this time.

The puppet of Gasparko pictured on the stamp is 48 cm tall, carved from limewood, and dressed in the textile. Its creator is F.Ilcik and its was made for the puppeteer Bohuslav Anderle in 1936 for his set of a big puppets. This puppet belongs to the private collection of Anton Anderle.

This international event is held in Luoyang, in Henan Province of central China. with total area of 15,208km2 and population of 6.5 million. Luoyang is not only a famous ancient capital and a historical city promulgated among the first group by the State Council of China,but also a key industrial city with outstnding industrial advantage and technological strength.

The exhibition logo is composed of the image of the Old City Tower of Luoyang, the Tree Peony, flying pigeons, stamp, the Earth and characters of "China 2009". The upcoming Year of the Ox falls on January 26th 2009 until February 13th,2010. This is the second year in sequence and recurring in twelve years cycle. According to China / Chinese astrology,the year 2560 will be the Year of Earth Ox.

As stated by one of the most popular myths,the Lord Buddha calling all the animals to come to him before departing this earth. Only 12 animals came after crossing the final river in the race,and as a reward he named a lunar year after each according to the order of its arrival. The Ox was the second to get there after the Rat which rode over his back intelligently jump ahead to reach the first place. The rest followed them were the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse,the Ram, the Monkey, the Rooster,the Dog and the Pig.

According to Chinese Astrology,people have to work harder and need stability in doing their job in the Year of the Ox. This year will be a hard time to get succeed. Butterflies are insect group of the order of Lepidoptera which means scaly wings,and well known for their remarkable life cycle from egg,larva (caterpillar),pupa (chrysalis), and then amazing metamorphosis into its adult form (imago). With colorful dazzling pattern of its wings, most the species are day-flying. Comprising of superfamilies of Papilionoidea and Hesperioidea, butterflies exhibit polymorphism,mimicry and aposematism. Some are developing symbiotic and parasitic relationships with social insects such as ants. Economically, butterflies are important by virtue of being one the major agents of pollination, although a smal number of species are pests domestics crops and trees.

As adults,butterflies consume only liquids which are sucked by means of their proboscis. Butterflies feed primarily on nectar from flowers. Some also derive nourishments from pollen,tree sap,rotting fruit,dung,and dissolved minerals in wet sand or dirt. butterflies sense the air for scents,wind and nectar using their antennae. These antennae are richly covered with sensillae in various shapes and colors.

Butterflies are strongly correlated with environment. Environmental damage has made butterflies population decreased and in turn reduced the fores diverly. Together with other insects and bats, butterflies help pollinating plants and secure forest dynamics. today, butterflies are spread out all over the world except in the very cold arid regions. there are estimated 17,500 species of butterflies out of about 180,000 species of Lepidoptera. More than 1,600 species are found in Indonesia with almost 40 percent of it categorized as endemic to Indonesia.

Capturing the beauty of this insect group,the Directorate General Post and Telecommunications of Indonesia issue stamp series "Butterflies" in commemorating Love Flora and Fauna National Day, 5th November 2007. The stamp design features four species of these lovely creatures.

Delias kristianiae van Mastright,2006

As a family member of Pieridae,this new species in found in Foya Mountain, Papua by Henk va Mastright in 2005 and described by him in 2006. The given is derived from Indonesia's lady,Mrs Kristianti Herawati, to honor and support President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in his effort to preserve Indonesian forest and protecting it against illegal logging. Wings span is 4.5cm.

Ornithoptera aesacus Ney,1903

This beautiful birdwing butterfly is an endemic species in Obi Island and not found in other place in the world. Threatened by habitat alteration as well as over collection due to high demands of collectors,this species should be granted a protection status. Wings span is 12 cm.

Ornithoptera croesus Wallace,1859

The beauty of this birdwing butterfly had caused great excitement to Alfred Russel Wallace who found and described this species. This endemic species can be found only in North Maluku and shall be granted a protection statue. Wings span 14.5 cm

Troides hypolitus Cramer,1775

This birdwing butterfly is one out of 19 species protected in Indonesia. This species is found in Sulawesi and Maluku. Wing span is 12cm

New-Found Species in Papua, Indonesia

At the and of the year 2005, a group of scientists organized an international exhibition called Foja Expedition to explore wildlife of the isolated Foja Mountains on Papua Island ( Indonesia's part or New Guinea ) in the tropical South Pacific. The expedition was sponsored by US-based Conservation International (CI), the Indonesian Institute of Sciences ( LIPI ), Cendrawasih University and Papua Institute of Conservation and Nature Resource. They trekked through an area in the mist-shrouded Foja Mountains, located just north the vast Mamberamo Basin of north-western ( Indonesian ) New Guinea,one of Asia's most isolated jungles. This area is a big virgin jungle, part of Mamberamo River stream the biggest river in Papua.

After spending nearly a month in the locality, the rechears discovered a trove of animals never before documented: new species of frogs, butterflies, plants, and an orange-faced honey eater, the first ne bird from island of Papua in more than 60 years. It's like a lost world has been found. The discoveries have led researches to conclude that more than 300,000 hectares(750,000 acres) of ole-growth tropical forest in the Foja Mountains remain untouched by humans. The team's main discoveries are :

- A new species of hone eater, the first new bird species discovered on the island of Papua since 1939

- The formerly unknown breeding grounds of a "lost" bird of paradise-the six-wired bird o paradise ( Parotia berlepschi )

- First photographs of the golden-fronted bower bird displaying as its bower.

- A new large mammal for Indonesia, the golden-mantled tree kangaroo ( dendrolagus pulcherimmus )

- More than 20 new species of frogs, including a tiny microhylid frog less than 14 mm ( a half inch ) long

- A series of previously under scribed plant species, including five new species of palms

- A white-flowered rhododrendon with flower about 15cm across

- Four new butterfly species.

Papua's forest in the furthest reaches of the Indonesian province of Papua ( Irian ) are some of the most bio diverse in the world, but they are increasingly under threat from commercial logging. However, the Foja Mountains are so isolated they remain untouched by human.
They also found animals, which supposed to exitinc, such as Smoky Honey-eater Bird and Golden-fronted Bower bird. The last found of this species, 1895 in Europe, was in a preserved form. The Biological Scientist thought that the bird was from a Dutch colony area in East Asia. Now, after 110 year past,this species found on Papua Island in the most eastern part of Indonesia.
Before this expedition there have been similiar expeditions on the surrounding area, namely Wapoga Expedition was focused on the jungle beyond Mamberamo River, estuary of Manirim and Hotice species of plants 24 of which are palms and 5 of them are new-found species.
